Favorite Cookies

I’m in Texas visiting my parents and brother (and his family) for Thanksgiving.  We arrived on Saturday and one of the first places I went to when I walked into my parents house was the garage.  That’s where the stand-up freezer is.  That’s where my Mom’s frozen, homemade, chocolate chip cookies are kept.

I remember back when they were in baggies with twisty-ties, and I wasn’t supposed to open the twisty-tie, get a couple cookies out, re-tie the bag and put them back in the freezer.  I still did it.  They are that good.
Now they are in Ziploc-type bags that unseal and reseal pretty easily.  I frequent the freezer a few times a day.
I love my Mom’s frozen, homemade, chocolate chip cookies.  I also enjoy the ham salad we have been eating for lunch, and the cinnamon roll she made me last night.  I am especially looking forward to the turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy we will enjoy over the next several hours.
It’s all really good.  But the frozen, homemade, chocolate chip cookies – they are my favorite.
Many times, people will ask me what my favorite Bible verse is.  For many years, I would scoff at the question because the entire Bible is really good!  How do you pick just one or two verses?  It is ALL meant to be read and applied to our lives and lived out.
Recently, I have been reading Scripture more regularly and with more attention.  And in doing so, I have found some passages that have jumped out at me.  Some passages apply to my life more, right where I’m at, and those have a specific richness for whatever I am going through.  I found that when I recently read Phillipians 4.
Looks at verses 4-13
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

What are your frozen, homemade, chocolate chip cookies?  If you’re not sure, than I encourage you to pick a book of the Bible and start reading.  God will make it come to life, in a whole new way!
