Run from the darkness. Sprint to the Light.

Have you ever seen the old TV show, ‘Unsolved Mysteries?’

I both loved and hated this show growing up.  I loved the stories and the drama that each show created as the producers unveiled a crime that had been committed.  I was amazed at how these criminals had gotten away with their crime, and were still ‘free’, somewhere.

And yet, the fact these men and women were still at-large, scared me.  I found myself especially frightened at night – when it was dark.  When my family would be driving somewhere at night, on vacation, I would remember the stories that were still unsolved, and wonder if the criminals were lurking in the woods, ready to jump out and attack us.

Do you want to know which episodes were my favorite?  Sometimes they would give updates to their stories, where the criminal had been found, and the mystery was solved.  During those stories, I literally felt the light.  I felt the darkness of fear fade away as the perpetrator was brought out of the mysterious darkness and into the light.

I was thinking of this recently, as I was driving to New Bremen at 5am for an FCA Coaches study.  It was dark, and oddly enough, some of those fears from 25 years before were creeping back in.  It’s amazing what our brain and our heart remembers, and how things from our past can so easily connect to our present when we are placed in a similar situation.  I had to force my mind out of the darkness and into the light once again.

The Bible talks a lot about light and darkness.

John 1:4-5 talks about Jesus saying, “ In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

Don’t we love watching the sunrise?  A part of that, is because of the beauty and majesty of the colors, as well as the peaceful way the day begins.  But isn’t part of it, because the light has returned?  The darkness is gone.  We can see and move and act.  We can live.

My life goal is found in 1 John 1:7.  “ if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Run from the darkness friends.  Sprint to the Light.
